Writing

As kids are learning to read they are also learning to write. Writing can be a difficult skill for many kids as it involves not only spelling, punctuation and grammar but they have to write legibly too. The combination of these skills can be overwhelming for some students, but parents can help their kid’s master writing and learn how to write a level papers and essays for school and beyond. Here are some tips for parents:
1. Learning how to spell is a continuous effort throughout grade school. Luckily kids often have computers with spellcheckers. Whenever possible let them type their writing on a computer and use the spell checker. It isn’t 100% accurate though so always read through the final draft before handing it in. Using a word processing software will also help with punctuation and grammar for most students.

2. Some students have a hard time holding the pen or pencil so that they can write. There are special adaptations available to help these students grip correctly and improve their handwriting. Sometimes the muscles in the hand are not very strong and they will benefit from playing with sand or clay as these toys use the same muscles and will help the muscles get stronger.

3. Kids who are older often use computers for writing their essays and papers. Kids who have a hard time typing can utilize software that allows them to speak into a microphone and have their words translated onto the paper. Dragon Naturally Speaking is one example of this type of software.

4. Writing a paper can feel overwhelming to students who have a hard time organizing their thoughts. Show them how to outline their paper before they begin writing. This may be as simple as a list of ideas they want to include or a specific list of facts that must be included. Teachers will often provide an outline or list of requirements for each assignment.

5. Start with the end. Students who are having a hard time getting started may want to write the final paragraph first. This paragraph should summarize what was covered in the essay. They can then rewrite this paragraph for the introduction. The introduction should tell the reader what they are going to learn in the essay
They are going to learn in the essay.

6. Once the introduction and ending are completed the student can fill in the rest of the information.

7. Follow all requirements for including bibliographic information. Kids who are doing research papers may be using the internet for their research, but they still need to cite it. They should also learn how to do research to ensure the information they are using is accurate and up to date.

8. Review the final copy and verify the students name is on it. Keep an electronic copy if they typed it on the computer. Make a paper copy if they did it by hand. If the homework isn’t handed in they will not need to redo it and can hand in the copy or email it to the teacher.

9. Kids who have a hard time getting their papers handed in on time may benefit from emailing it to the teacher as well as handing it in via the required method. Check with the teacher first before trying this method.

10. Writing is a skill that is practiced over many years. Students who struggle regularly with putting their thoughts down on paper may want to see if they can hand in a video or other type of presentation instead.

Writing is an essential skill that will be used throughout their adult lives, but not everyone is good at it. Learning how to communicate through writing will help students get into college and get a job when they are ready. Parents who are not able to help their kids may want to consider getting them some extra help in the form of a tutor or a class specific to writing.
